Aquamarine and Schorl – NERA 016

Measurements:  40 x 22 x 18 mm

Description:  A group of pale blue aquamarine crystals, with schorl crystals (variety foitite) inside and on some of its surfaces. There are also bits of white feldspar on some surfaces. 

The specimen has very little damage.

Chemical Composition:  Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈  (aquamarine) 
                                       NaFe²⁺₃Al₆Si₆O₁₈(BO₃)₃(OH)₄  (schorl)    
                                       KAlSi₃O₈  (feldspar)  

Hardness on Mohs Scale:  (aquamarine) 7.5 - 8.0
                                           (schorl)  7.5                                      
                                           (feldspar)  6 - 6.5
