Aquamarine with Hematite and Schorl – NERA 019

Measurements:  60 x 57 x 30 mm 

Description:  Pale blue aquamarine crystals with a small group of schorl crystals, sit on a feldspar matrix. Some of the aquamarine crystals are capped with (?)hematite (image upper right). 

The specimen has very little damage, only a few aquamarine crystals have small nicks.

Chemical Composition:  Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈  (aquamarine) 
                                       NaFe²⁺₃Al₆Si₆O₁₈(BO₃)₃(OH)₄  (schorl)  
                                         KAlSi₃O₈ (feldspar)              

Hardness on Mohs Scale:  (aquamarine)  7.5 - 8.0
                                          (schorl)  7.5  
                                           (feldspar)  6 - 6.5
