The
Northern Cape Province is a mineral-rich area that covers several
hundred kilometres. It includes the famous Kalahari
Manganese Fields and well-known mines like N'Chwaning,
Blesberg, Riemvasmaak and Jan Coetzee. Because the
Kalahari
Manganese Fields
is such a specialized area, we created a seperate page for
it.

Springbok
is the capital
town of this area and lies on a national road (N7) approx 550 km north
of Cape Town. This
area is of special
interest to us because of its interesting quartz
specimens.

Steinkopf,
some 50 km north of Springbok,
yields beautiful smokies and
phantoms.
Pella (which
originated as a mission station in the 1800's) is situated a
few kilometres from the Orange River (150 km NE
of Springbok).
It has a Coloured community, many of whom make their living
from mining a wide assortment of crystals from the nearby
hills,
mountains and also the river banks. The area is
collectively known
as the Orange River
area.
These
specimens include orangy-red hematite covered quartz crystals,
clear crystals with green, orange, red, black and amethyst phantoms, to
mention
just a few. Lately these mentioned specimens are becoming
more scarce.
